Bloomin' Grilled Apples

Bloomin' grilled apples are cut like a bloomin' onion, fanned open, brushed with cinnamon butter, and grilled until caramelized. The thin slices soften and mingle with cinnamon sugar, then bloom out as you serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Apple base
  • 4 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 4 tbsp butter melted
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 vanilla ice cream for serving

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Slice and prepare the apples
  1. Cut thin slices into the apples from top to bottom without cutting all the way through, keeping the core intact so the apples fan open.
  2. Fan the apple slices open slightly and brush the cinnamon butter mixture all over the cut surfaces.
  3. Wrap the bottom of each apple in foil, leaving the top exposed so it can grill and caramelize.
Grill until tender and caramelized
  1. Grill the apples over medium heat for 12-15 minutes, turning carefully if needed, until the apples are tender and the sugar is caramelized.
Serve
  1. Serve the bloomin' grilled apples warm with vanilla ice cream.
Make the cinnamon butter
  1. Mix melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until evenly combined.

Notes

To get the bloom effect, slice evenly but stop short of cutting through the core, and keep the exposed top brushed so the cinnamon sugar caramelizes. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container up to 2 days and rewarm on a grill or in a skillet until hot; freezing is not recommended for best texture. For a dairy-free option, use a plant-based butter substitute with the same measurements.
